misc

i have been using american express for 8+ years. from this very moment i'm removing it from my wallet. amex doesn't want me to use it. so be it.

i never thought about getting amex.

i don't know about rest of the world, amex hasn't been very popular amongst merchants in australia due to its 'permium' merchant fee. besides, the card annual fee is not cheap.

i was offered a gold card with no annual fee forever. that's a nice bait. most credit cards would only offer no annual fee for the 1st year.

they also seem very sincere. attached with letter of offer was pre-printed application form with some of my information, which obviously was extracted from some partner companies. very often i ignore credit card offers because filling in forms is scaring.

i became owner of amex.

apart from most big companies like department stores and major supermarkets, most merchants will not accept amex or charge surcharge which is more expensive than visa. i only use it when there's no surcharge.

throughout the years, amex automatically offer credit limit increase. without me asking for it. dear amex, i never asked for it!

and this is how amex treat loyal long time customer...

when i went to fuel the car this afternoon, the transaction wouldn't go through. i thought it's probably some glitch, which sometimes happens. i paid with visa.

when i got home, i got a letter dated 4 days ago that amex decided to decrease my credit limit. they decreased it such that i had only $25 credit limit left!

i haven't used the card since weekend. i don't know if it was effective as soon as they printed the letter or just today. regardless, that's such a short notice!

imagine what embarassment i'd be if i were to dine out with friends and i couldn't pay! or what inconvenience it may have caused if i needed to pay for something and i didn't have the cash!

that's bad customer service

by giving me only $25 credit limit left is cutting me off. esp without any notice!

the statement is paid every month. tho may not in full in recent months, but at least more than the minimum requirement. if they're suspecting my repayment capability, shouldn't there be any discussion or reasonable notification prior to taking such drastic action? esp reducing to such pathetic embarrassing credit limit?

credit card companies make money from people spending using their cards. by taking such action, apparently they don't want my business. why should i let them profit from my spending? not to mention that they're going to profit from the interest i'll be paying. yeah, they make even more money from interest!

oh wait. i asked google and google told me that there are so many people got hit by this. some  had been members for 25+ years.

goodbye amex

i'm not going to sort it out with them, which most likely would be through call centers, which mostly going to be diverted overseas to someone with hard to understand english.

i also don't see why i should continue using such an unreliable card. if it failed me once, it will fail me again. if they're not telling me why they did this to me, why should i teach them a lesson? i believe they've received a lot of complaints already. if they're still doing this, they don't care!

it's a piece of useless plastic card hogging my wallet space. it's not accepted by many merchants. even if it's accepted, most would ask for surcharge. why should i pay extra just to use that plastic when other plastics  incur less or do not incur any surcharge?

i thought about keeping the card and not spend anything so they don't get any profit. but then, they have 1 extra member they can boast about! why should i stay to make their number look good?

i look forward to cut you into half. soon. very soon.

Lindai had the amex blue i think it was called, the one with a microchip inside your card or some s***t. lol. i only used it once in a while cos they got a good deal for signing up, then once i used that deal i cancelled it right after. that's what you should do, keep using their special offers till they cant give it to you any more.

@linda, we're so backward in australia. they're talking about frauds and most credit cards don't have the chips in them!
i only continued to use amex because of "no annual fee forever"! that forever sucked me in. and i should've known, nothing is forever!

cynthiaDoes most credit cards in Australia require to apply cards with an annual fee? I know that whenever I apply a credit card, I make sure that there is no annual fee charges and I apply that has bonus i.e mileage points or cash back rewards.

lindayea even here not too many merchants take amex, due to their customer service. meaning if the customer wants a charge back amex will do it without too much hassle. unlike mc/visa takes a while, and need a reason.

annieoh yeah credit card companies are onto us - they decrease credit limit so much that you would get hit with over-limit charge if you don't pay attention. not to mention they increase the APR drastically. *sigh*

annieaaand they would cancel your card if there is no transaction/activity and no balance for over 6 months.

aaaaand no they don't care about your loyalty.

@cynthia, most card cost annual fee, esp those with mileage awards attached. with my amex though it's said no annual fee, i still have to pay annual fee for the reward program, so it's not completely free.

@annie, yeah, they don't care. they spent so much money flooded mall stands to get new members and now they're doing this to chase members away. do they want business or not? :/
