I’ve had several unsuccessful DIY ombre hair attempts in the past. After the previous failed attempt with a product that’s designed for ombre hair, I was going to get the same product but in different color that’s specifically for dark hair, but… you know I like to get things at discounted price, because smart tight-ass consumer do not buy things at full price when you know that they are discounted regularly. Either it didn’t happen or when it happened, it was out of stock.
I ended up using something in my current inventory that was purchased a while ago when it was discounted to A$10 at either Priceline or Chemist Warehouse.
Schwarzkopf Live Salon Permanent Oleo Intense in 5-86 Sweet Brown.
It was my first time using hair color from this line. There are 2 things that attracted my attention. 1) The vibrant hair photos on the box. 2) It gives grey coverage with no ammonia. While ammonia smell doesn’t bother me that much, it still smells.
The contents in the box, which are quite standard in most DIY coloring kits.
I don’t like that the conditioners come in sachets. I’m lazy and hate the extra step of looking for scissors to snip it.
I also don’t like the plastic gloves it comes with. It’s like wearing plastic bags on my hands. Gloves wasn’t something to complain about until I’ve used nice fitting gloves that comes with some hair colors, which gives my fingers better movements.
I do-do-do-do love that it has no ammonia smell, as advertised. The husband could usually tell I colored my hair because they leave a bad smell in the bathroom even though it’s well ventilated. He couldn’t tell I did it this time!
Because I want to achieve ombre effect, hair color was applied to the ends of my hair. Since I color my hair regularly, the ends of my hair are quite drying and damaged after going through so much chemicals. While the color didn’t look as shiny and vibrant as the package, it’s still quite soft after the 2nd wash with regular conditioner. The end of the hair is still not very drying after a week!
I also can’t say much about grey coverage this time since the ends of my hair have been colored so many times and do not have greys.
This color is recommended on the medium brown as the darkest shade. Although I have naturally dark hair, since it was previously dyed to lighter shade, I was hopeful it may show up.
The result is very very subtle. I didn’t get the visible ombre effect. As said, my hair is darker than the darkest recommended hair color so I didn’t expect much.
While I didn’t achieve the ombre effect I want, I’m quite impressed with the product itself. The no-ammonia wins my heart. Will definitely buy it but in a color that will work for me.
Like: No ammonia! Non dripping. Hair is not drying.
Dislike: Conditioner package. The gloves.
